Amazon FBA Prep in China: The 2026 Seller's Guide

How China prep-at-source works for Amazon FBA - what gets done before freight, who handles customs, what it costs, and how to find a vetted China prep partner.

If your products are manufactured in China, you have a choice most new sellers don't know they have: get your inventory prepped for Amazon FBA before it leaves China, instead of importing it to a US prep center first. Prepping at the source can cut a whole leg of freight and handling out of your supply chain. This guide covers what China prep-at-source actually involves, who handles customs, what it costs, and how to find a partner you can trust.

What "prep at source" means

Prep at source means a prep center or 3PL in China receives your goods straight from your manufacturer, preps them to Amazon's requirements, and ships them onward - often consolidating multiple suppliers into one shipment before freight. Your units arrive at the Amazon fulfillment center already labeled and packaged, with no second stop at a US facility. The alternative, importing then prepping, sends unprepped goods to a US prep center first. We compare the two routes in detail in Prep at Source vs. Import-Then-Prep.

What a China prep center actually does

A capable China prep partner does most of what a US prep center does, close to where your goods are made:

  • Receiving and inspection - checking your supplier's output against your order and catching defects before they ship.
  • FNSKU labeling - applying the scannable Amazon barcode to every unit. As of 2026 Amazon no longer applies these for you, so it isn't optional (see Who preps your FBA inventory now that Amazon stopped).
  • Poly-bagging, bundling, and multipacks - bagging loose or apparel items, assembling sets, and marking bundles as sold-as-set.
  • Category-specific prep - bubble wrap for fragile goods, suffocation-warning labels, expiration dating, and opaque bagging where the category requires it.
  • Carton labeling and palletization - the box and pallet labels for the shipment into Amazon.
  • Consolidation - combining orders from several factories into one freight shipment, which lowers your per-unit freight cost.

Who handles customs when you import from China

This is the question that trips up the most sellers, and it's where prep-at-source needs care. When goods move from China into the US market, someone has to be the importer of record and clear customs. Some China prep partners arrange customs clearance and coordinate the import; others hand your freight to a forwarder and leave customs to you. Neither is wrong, but you need to know which before you commit. On PrepMarketplace you can match with partners who arrange customs clearance, so the responsibility is clear from the first conversation rather than a surprise at the port.

What China FBA prep costs

China prep is almost always quote-based rather than published per-unit rates, because pricing depends on your product, volume, and how much consolidation and customs work is involved. As a rough anchor, standard per-unit prep (receive, FNSKU, poly-bag) runs in the same ballpark as US prep, and the real savings come from freight consolidation and skipping a US handling leg - not from the prep line item itself. To sanity-check a quote against typical market prep rates, use the free prep cost estimator, then ask each partner for a written quote on your actual SKUs.

When prep in China makes sense (and when it doesn't)

Prep at source tends to win when you manufacture in China at real volume, use multiple suppliers you want consolidated, and ship steady replenishment. It's weaker when you need US-based returns handling, very fast turnaround on small test batches, or hands-on quality control you'd rather do domestically. If you're unsure, Prep at Source vs. Import-Then-Prep walks through the decision with a side-by-side on cost, speed, risk, and customs.

How to vet a China prep partner - before you send a single carton, confirm:

  • FNSKU and Amazon-specific capability - they prep for FBA specifically, not just general export packing.
  • Customs - whether they arrange clearance or leave it to you, in writing.
  • Communication - a responsive English-speaking contact and clear turnaround times.
  • Freight relationships - the forwarders they work with and whether they consolidate suppliers.
  • A track record - other FBA sellers they've shipped for.
  • A written quote on your actual SKUs, not a generic rate card.
